Tips for Dogs
that Jump the Fence or Dig Under the Fence - Keep Your Dog
Inside the Fence
There are numerous fun things your dog may find
to entice him or her out of your yard, be it small
animals, other dogs, or even people or interesting smells
and other sights. But it is important to keep your dog
inside the fence. So if they regularly are jumping
the fence or digging under your fence, here are a
few things that might help.
First of all, you can try regular old electric wire with an
electric shock box. Don't worry, the shock is mild (I know this
as I have been shocked a million billion times). But although
mild, still not pleasant, and your dogs will strive to avoid
it. Run it along the top and the bottom for maximum effect.
It's pretty easy to do and won't take more than a few hours at
most unless you have a very large yard of several acres or
more.
Make sure you buy the electrical box that is for dogs and
not horses. (Note: If you have a tiny dog under 5 pounds, this
will not be a good idea but is safe for other larger size
dogs.)
The drawback of using electric wire is weeds tend to grow up
and cause it to short out, thereby resulting in it not working
sometimes so it's something you'll have to keep an eye on.
As an alternative you can get the underground radio fence. I
have one of those and it works great for my 5 dogs. In fact,
nothing else has been able to stop them from digging under the
fence and/or jumping or climbing over the fence. The one from
PetSafe works perfectly and is pretty
cheap compared to the more expensive versions like Invisible
Fence. I've had mine for about 10 years and would absolutely
recommend it.
But of course everything has it's pros and cons, and the
negative thing about the underground radio fence is that if
the wire breaks you have to search for the break to repair
it. It's a snap to repair though.
So those are the two methods I recommend for keeping your
dog safely inside your fence at home.
