Teach Your Dog the "Stay" Command
There are many different methods you can use to
teach your dog the stay command, and most
of them work quite well. Here is one method you can try at
home.
Have your dog walk along with you on a leash or at "heel"
and then have him sit. Then say "stay" and use your choice of
hand signals, something like holding your hand up like you are
saying "stop." Then take a few steps away. If your dog stays in
place, reward him. If he gets up tell him "no" and start
over.
Repeaet this inside the house without other distractions
until you feel that your dog has a good understanding of the
command. He may not be doing it perfectly yet, but at this
point, to your knowledge, he does know what it means.
Now, try for longer and longer periods of time, and even go
into another room out of sight. Once your dog is performing the
stay pretty well inside the house, go ahead and try it
outside.
Be aware that once you go outside of the house you will be
dealing with even more distractions so you might have to begin
your trainng all over again. Don't worry though, it will go a
lot faster the second time!
