Electric Shock
Collars for Dogs - Yes or No?
If you have ever considered the use of
electric shock collars for your dogs, you
may have wondered if you were being cruel to your beloved
pets to even consider such a thing.
If you are considering using a shock collar for the purpose
of stopping your dog from barking, I would tend to agree that
yes, that is cruel. And if you are someone with little
experience, I would also not recommend trying to train a dog
using an electric shock collar either.
However, if you are planning to buy an underground fence and use a shock
collar in conjunction with said fence, and as long as you
plan to train your dog on the boundaries so they are aware
of where they can go, then I am all on board with that
idea.
No, I don't think that type of thing is cruel in the least.
Far worse to allow your dog to escape your fence or run willy
nilly all over the place, possibly getting hit by a car in the
meantime. I'd much rather he be subjected to a small shock once
or twice and then stay safely in the yard.
The good news is once your dog is trained to understand what
is happening, they most often never even go near the edge of
the yard again and will never get shocked again. Dogs are
smart, they are going to avoid this if at all possible!
Another thing to consider - the shock is pretty mild. I've
mistakenly gotten shocked lots of times myself. It's not
something I'd choose, obviously, but it's not horrible
either.
Remember though that you should not use a shock collar (for
any reason) on an extremely tiny dog.
