Doggie Door
Training Tips - How to Easily Train Your Dog to Use a Doggie
Door
There are a multitude of reasons why people
choose to purchase a doggie door for their pet. Most
often, people buy these to help with the chore of potty
training. You will be amazed how much easier it is to
house train a dog if you have a doggie door installed. But
that is not the only reason. Some people simply don't like
to have to get up and let their dogs in and out multiple
times a day. If this is you, a doggie door might be a
great addition to your house.
Now, training your dog (whether a
puppy or an older dog) shouldn't take too long, usually
anywhere from one day to several days or even up to a week in
some cases. Then every once in a while you run across a dog who
takes to it right away and doesn't need any training at all.
That's always a plus. But if your dog is not the type that goes
right through at first, don't worry, as it usually does take a
few days to get used to the new doggie door.
Your pet door will usually have rubber flaps that open and
close to keep the weather out. These normally make a noise
which could scare your dog so at first you should just hold the
door open yourself and/or try to gently push your dog through.
Many times they will just go right on through. Sometimes they
won't come back in though, so you'll have to hold the door open
again or entice them through with food or a toy.
A great way to help your dog learn the ropes is if he can watch
another dog going through the doggy door. In fact, if this is
possible, you can just show them one time how to do it and then
leave them with the other dog. This is the fastest and easiest
way but not always possible.
If it takes your dog a few days to learn, don't worry, this is
normal and before you know it they'll be zipping through the
door without a second thought.
